Some comments:

They do love their Tommy in Boulder!

Those who "Voted but not HD13" did cast their ballot for president but did not successfully choose one of the two candidates for State House.

So it looks like lots (15%) of voters were only voting for President, and simply skipped over the State House District race.

Examining the numbers in Clear Creek County, as one moves down the ballot to lesser races, there is a clear deterioration in numbers of people voting for each race.  HD13 was the 5th vote in line; take a look at how the vote totals withered as we go down the ballot:  President 100%, U.S. Senate 99.6%, U.S. Congress 96.8%, U.C. Regent 89.1%, State House 83%.

Nevertheless, some of those not voting for HD13 were Republicans who vote only party line and had no candidate in the race.  There was no write-in candidate available, so by not voting they were effectively choosing "none of the above".  But the other half of the voters not voting in the HD13 race, probably did not have the inclination to study any of the rest of the races on the ballot beyond U.S. Congress, and opted for no vote rather than pick at random.  What this means is that Libertarians have an upward potential of maybe 20 more percentage points -- not enough to beat the Democrat, but certainly a better showing is possible.

So how can libertarians win the HD13 race?  Let's start with Clear Creek County.  Examining the numbers once more, we see that there are 7,914 voters available.  In this election, as a popular incumbent the Democrat got 3,391 to vote for him.  There are 4,523 voters who did not vote for the Democrat, either because they didn't come to the polls at all (2,446) or because they voted for the Libertarian (1,174), or because they were insufficiently interested to vote for either candidate, with the ballot right there in front of them (903).  So, there is a pool of 3,349 potential Libertarian voters who didn't come out to vote or who only voted for the first races on the ballot.

Thanks, folks, for your vote this year.  See you again in 2006!

Notice how Clear Creek, with vastly more registered Republicans, nevertheless broke for Kerry.  This is due to Colorado's interesting "Unaffiliated" factor, in which Colorado has roughly even numbers of Republicans, Democrats, and voters who don't side with either major party.  Statewide, Republicans edge out Democrats by 5.6 percent, but there are more unaffiliated than Democrat!  These unaffiliated voters tend to vote Democrat in state and local races.

Pre-Election page follows:

Let me introduce myself!  I am Rand Fanshier, and with your help I will win the election this November 2, 2004 for Colorado State House of Representatives, District 13.  I live in Clear Creek County, and the area covered by my district includes Clear Creek, Gilpin, and the West part of Boulder County.

As this year proceeds, I will be publishing educational pieces that will strip away the mystery of our government, and make it easy to understand, and easy to fix and to change so we can get our liberties back.

10/29/2004 - How the Money System is Taking the Fruits of your Labor.
With the example of health care costs and the money supply M3, let me show you a glimpse of where the bright future that we used to expect went.  As a member of the State Legislature, I promise to expose the culprits who stole the American Dream, with at least one expose per week during my term in office.  The Republicans and Democrats won't do that, because they are part of the problem.  Vote Libertarian!

10/24/2004 - Foreign Debt Trends.
I compiled recent figures so it's easy to see which countries are propping up the U.S. deficits by purchasing Treasury securities, and which are not.

10/7/2004 - Speech given on TV in Longmont on October 7.
It's time to break the stranglehold of Republicans and Democrats in the State legislature.

10/3/2004 - Daily Times-Call Article.
Libertarian Looks for Seat Under Democrat.

9/22/2004 - www.votecolorado.org.
Rand's questionnaire responses.

9/6/2004 - Rand Fanshier answers Questions.
Here Rand filled out a questionnaire supplied by the Rocky Mountain News, and his answers might help you decide if you want to support his candidacy this year.

7/28/2004 - Boulder Daily Camera Article  cached

3/1/2004 - Origins and Workings of the Federal Reserve Bank.
This one explains how the government gets paid, where our income taxes go, where the money for our credit cards and home mortgages comes from, and how and to whom America got $7 trillion in debt.

What does the above banner mean?
It means that we have studied the numbers, and if people who are

Here's my thoughts on a few issues:

Slash Government Spending
Republicans and Democrats have already squandered the entire surplus income in this country by taxing as much as they possibly can, stretching our once wealthy country to the breaking point. Social Security has been looted, and domestic lenders are tapped out.  Deprived of new sources, they are now borrowing from international lenders, using our children's future income as collateral.  As State Representative, I will encourage people to find ways of accomplishing social goals without involving any more government.  Let's get serious here, because Local, State and Federal government is indebting every man, woman and child in America by $4,000 every year, much of that to foreigners.

Here's two practical ideas that will reduce government expenses drastically:
1)  Give Colorado Businesses 100% tax credit for providing employees family health insurance.
2)  Offer 100% tax credit to Colorado Businesses that offer a real pension or retirement fund.

Create Jobs Locally
I will help employers pay more and hire more, by insisting the government pay off its debts and become less of a burden. Our government actively encourages American business to hire labor overseas. I'm sure you have been puzzled to hear Democrat and Republican leaders say that it's actually a good thing this is happening.  What they are not telling you is that without corporations spending dollars on labor in foreign countries, there is no place else for all that freshly printed currency to go, and that is how the governments overspending is supported. That is a complex thought, but unless all of us begin to understand our own economy, we will be voting ourselves and our children right into slavery to our lenders.

Build Families
Do not be fooled by bureaucrats' promises that they want to 'help' our families. Let's tell them we can take care of our own families, thank you very much. Let's stop the creep of property taxes! Just because our government props up its economy by offering money at low interest rates to lenders, ballooning the price of property, is no reason for government to raise the taxes on our property! Let us keep our own money, and use it pay off our mortgages so we have something to leave for our children. Let's stop the government spending the income our children haven't even earned yet!  The tide is rising, and Americans are beginning to wake up to the fact they can change things.

"The humanitarian wishes to be a prime mover in the lives of others. He cannot admit either the divine or the natural order, by which men have the power to help themselves. The humanitarian puts himself in the place of God.  [The humanitarian] is confronted by two awkward facts: first that the competent do not need his assistance; and second, that the majority of people... positively do not want to be ‘done good’ by the humanitarian.  Of course what the humanitarian actually proposes is that he shall do what he thinks is good for everybody. It is at this point that the humanitarian sets up the guillotine...the humanitarian in theory is the terrorist in action." - Isabel Paterson

Here's two practical ideas that will drive government inefficiencies out of our community:
1) Give parents 100% tax credit for schooling their children in a manner of their own choosing.
2) Give Colorado businesses 100% tax credit for funding after-school activities like scouts, sports, hobby clubs.

Decriminalize Marijuana Use
Our experiment in controlling human vice has done nothing to curb drug use and makes criminals of people who do not infringe on the rights of others. The plain purpose of laws is to protect the rights of people. When there is no victim, there should be no law. Roughly a third of today's prisoners never hurt a soul, and it's morally wrong to hold them, and wrong to take money from us taxpayers to keep them in jail.  You are concerned about your children, and so am I.  Did you know the black market makes it easier for school-age teens to obtain marijuana than alcohol or tobacco?  With the help of the "war on drugs," use by underage minors has multiplied tenfold over the last 30 years.  Let's legalize marijuana and treat it like alcohol and tobacco. This will limit the black market and give parents control over what their children have access to. Prohibition has created a scoff-law society and criminal counter-culture representing the most severe threat to Colorado's children.

"The Drug War is one of the most successful programs the government has ever instituted. It fails to stop drug use, or even curtail it substantially – all the better for the Drug Warriors, who cite increases in drug use (as well as the occasional reduction) as reason to feed their coffers and line their pockets." - Anthony Gregory

Encourage Freedom and Liberty
I want you to know that America is not great because of government. America is great because for most of her history, her people were self-reliant and their efforts were not taxed or regulated away. America is great because her people were free! Now close your eyes, and imagine tomorrow waking up, free to do today anything you want as long as it doesn't take away anyone else's right to do the same. You don't have to ask permission! This is my vision for us in Colorado. After we get our own freedom back, maybe then we can show the rest of America how it's done.

There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible to live without breaking laws. -- Ayn Rand

For Me, It's Personal
Colorado is one of the last great Free States, with an attitude of liberty as it was understood by America's founding fathers. That's why I moved here, years ago. But what I discovered is that native Coloradoans don't seem to have a good defense against big government types that are moving in from the East and West coasts. That's why I am running for government office. I'll fight those who want to control you, and make sure government is the very smallest part of our lives. Let's return to the spirit of the old West!  Or at least to the constitutionally limited government designed by America's founding fathers.
